Chiang Khong Intermodal Transport Terminal Linking Thailand - Laos – China Open in 2020

Minister of Transport, Mr. Arkhom Termpittayapaisith presided over the official groundbreaking ceremony of the Chiang Khong Intermodal Transport Terminal, accompanied by Mr. Sanith Phromwong, Director of the Department of Land Transport, and others delegates from both public and private sectors, on January 18, 2018.

According to Mr. Arkhom, the Chiang Khong Intermodal Transport Terminal is located on Asian Highway 3 (Highway no. 1020) near the 4th Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge (Chiang Khong – Huai Sai) and Chiang Khong Boundary Post in Chiang rai province, total construction area is 537,600 square meters (336 rai). The construction plan is divided into 2 phases, the first construction phase will include all administration and customs facilities which are the custom bonded warehouse, the first Container Freight Station (CFS), Central Administration Building, Operation Building, Warehouse, Container Maintenance and Repair Building, Parking, Canteen and Residential Building for Officials. Total Capacity of Terminal storage (Stacking area) is about 270,000 TEU / year (twenty-foot equivalent unit), the estimated completion of the first construction phase is within 2020.

In addition, the construction of the second phase will take approximately 3 years and the expected completion of the project is in 2023. The plan in the second phase includes the construction of intermodal facilities, linking railway with trucks transport from People’s Republic of China and Laos People Democratic Republic through R3A route, in line with the railway development project from Denchai district, Prae to Chaing Khong district in Chiang Rai. Moreover, the development of terminal area of landside operation to increase capacity in the second phase will include Customs Export and Import Clearance Warehouses, the second Container Freight Station, Container Yard and X-ray building. Total capacity of the terminal in 2023 is 440,000 TEU / year (twenty-foot equivalent unit) with the estimated total budget approximately 2.3 billion THB. * The figure in Prachachat news is 2,265.0655 million, so I round up to 2.3 billion.

The Chiang Khong Intermodal Transport Terminal is expected to become regional trade hub, creating linkage of intermodal transport network among Thai, Laos People Democratic Republic and People’s Republic of China in the northern region. The terminal will improve cross border transportation, facilitate border trade activities and significantly promote the growth of trade, tourism and investment in the region.
